Carlanto Tiles, and Carlanto Tiling is a division of J&G Agencies Ltd. Over the past 10 years, the brand has built up an excellent reputation as a specialist tile specifier, supplier and contractor, particularly in the swimming pool sector. The Tile Association  ‘Best Commercial Project – Large (over 250m2) entry is Templemore Avenue Swimming Pool. Carlanto was responsible for supplying and fitting all the tiles and fixtures for the original Victorian building and the new extension.

As a Specialist Sub-Contractor to the Principle Contractor – Heron Brothers, Carlanto Tiling assisted the specification process, ensuring best products and best practices were used, including full Supervision of both employed and self-employed Tilers The Design Team involved two different Architectural Practices McAdam Design were responsible for the new build part of the building, incorporating a new 25 metre pool with movable floor, changing village and Spa area, offering modern day amenities.  All walls and floors were tiled throughout as would be expected of a modern-day pool.

Consarc Design were responsible for the careful refurbishment of the Heritage part of the building, including two pools dating back to the early 19th century, as well as the creation of a Visitor Attraction which narrates the story of the very first Victorian Pool and Baths. The Visitor Attraction has been built over the top of the original pool and a glass ceiling allows one to see what the inside of the pool looked like. Originally known as Templemore Baths, we believe this building to be the last surviving Victorian Public Baths in Northern Ireland. It was opened in 1893 to provide essential washing and sanitary facilities for families drawn to the east of the City as a result of work being provided by the growth of the Harland and Wolff Shipyard, famous for building the famous Titanic.

One of these pools is operational again as we stripped it back to concrete, applied a concrete repair, followed by 50 mm thick Wedi tile backer/insulation board down into the walls and 20 mm thick to floors, Ardex Tanking, Adhesive and epoxy grout throughout. The second pool was opened in 1893, along with the original baths. This area has been very carefully restored, with enormous attention to detail, in order to preserve and maintain, the reality of what it was like to bathe during the Victorian era. Carlanto had to colour-match the new tiles with the existing ones in the old pool to guarantee that the heritage of the Templemore Baths would be kept. We worked closely with the client to understand the historical significance and characteristics of the original tiles. This step of the process required meticulous attention to detail and a comprehensive understanding of historical tiling styles. The operational pool in the original building also required a new tank to be effectively built within the existing one. The team used a tile backerboard in various thicknesses, which was then waterproof-tanked and tiled. The surrounding of the swimming pool also required screeds to be applied in varying thicknesses to provide a flat/level surface to tile onto. By their very nature, swimming pool contracts require more than just tiling. There was a lot of form work undertaken to create levels and falls into gullies and outlets. It was our responsibility to render walls, screed and level floors and establish heights and levels for finger grips nosings and channel outlets/ gutters. We had the opportunity to showcase our skillset in tiling swimming pools, a specialised area of expertise, and provide a bespoke service to our clients, taking into account the historical significance of the building and its specific requirements. We are also delighted to have contributed to the preservation of the building’s history while enhancing its functionality and aesthetics.

Carlanto takes immense pride in having worked on a building that will have a lasting impact as an important community facility. The team of professionals on site were dedicated, hard-working and every unique challenge was confronted with diligence and expertise. The project allowed us to demonstrate our attention to detail, craftsmanship, and ability to deliver high-quality results. The positive feedback received from the client and the community further reinforces our satisfaction with our participation in the project. It was an honour to work on a project with such a wide impact, as Templemore Baths. It will be visited by thousands of locals and tourists. A most wonderful project to be involved in after 32 years in the industry.
